Timberland 6-Inch Premium
Since 1976 · 50 years to 2026 · First made in Newmarket, New Hampshire
In 1973, the small town of Newmarket in New Hampshire became home to an unexpected monument in footwear history. The Timberland 6-Inch Premium boot was conceived by Nathan and Sidney Swartz with a practical ambition: to solve a persistent problem for construction workers enduring New England winters. At that time, waterproof leather boots were largely a contradiction in terms. Timberland's injection-molding technique changed this by permanently fusing the sole to the upper using silicone-infused nubuck leather, creating a boot that was both genuinely waterproof and light enough to wear through an eight-hour workday without exhaustion.
For two decades, the boot remained what it was designed to be: essential equipment for welders, roofers, and laborers across the American Northeast. The late 1980s marked an unforeseen inflection. New York street style discovered the boot's combination of functional durability and visual authenticity. The hip-hop community adopted it wholesale. Tupac Shakur wore them to the Soul Train Music Awards. Notorious B.I.G. referenced them repeatedly in his lyrics. The nickname "Timbs" entered the vernacular of New York and Philadelphia. What had been workwear became streetwear, and then fashion. Jennifer Lopez's 2002 music video cemented the transition into mainstream visibility. The boot had crossed from the job site to the catwalk without altering its fundamental design.
The 6-Inch Premium retains the specifications that made it revolutionary: premium waterproof nubuck leather, seam-sealed construction, a padded collar, rustproof hardware, and a rubber lug outsole. Modern versions incorporate 400g PrimaLoft insulation and leather linings, incremental refinements rather than departures. The boot's durability—its ability to function across radically different contexts, from construction sites to fashion runways to everyday urban wear—suggests something about the relationship between honest design and longevity. Fifty years into production, the boot looks substantially as it did in 1973. It remains the boot from which everything else at Timberland derives, the foundation upon which the brand's collaborations and innovations have been built.
