Delvaux Brillant Bag

Since 1958 · 68 years to 2026 · First made in Brussels, Belgium

Sixty-four leather pieces, hand-assembled since 1958.

The Brillant is a handbag composed of sixty-four distinct pieces of leather and hardware, assembled by hand into a rigid, trapezoidal form that requires no internal reinforcement. Its structure reflects the geometric precision of mid-century modernism—the design was inspired by the striking Philips Pavilion at Expo 58, engineered by Le Corbusier. This architectural approach to leather goods distinguishes the Brillant from conventional handbag construction; it is, in essence, wearable architecture.

Each bag is crafted in the ateliers of Belgium and France using box calfskin selected for its fine grain and capacity to develop a unique patina over time. The assembly process involves meticulous leather-skiving and stitching techniques performed by artisans trained in the house's savoir-faire. The signature horseshoe-shaped buckle, rendered in metal, completes the composition. Since its introduction, the Brillant has been available in multiple sizes and finishes, yet the fundamental design and construction method have remained constant.

La Maison Delvaux, founded in 1829, holds the distinction of being the world's oldest luxury leather goods house. The Brillant serves as the flagship of this heritage, embodying the brand's commitment to structural integrity and timeless design over transient fashion cycles. The bag has maintained its status as a benchmark for luxury leather goods across nearly seven decades, with well-maintained examples retaining 70 to 85 percent of their original retail value. Its endurance reflects both the durability of its materials and construction, and the cultural weight of an object that has remained essentially unchanged since the optimism of the postwar era.
